By now, Kate Middleton will have already become Prince William’s princess bride. The royal wedding has been the center of attention of the international media for the last few months, but unnecessarily so.
Of course, it wouldn’t be terrible to be Princess Catherine, who possesses the same diamond and sapphire ring that Princess Diana was given by Prince Charles in 1980.
Sure, her wedding dress is arguably the most anticipated and celebrated article of fashion in decades; and sure, their wedding is expected to break records in terms of viewership, with over two million people anticipated to tune in.
But this wedding certainly isn’t the most important event happening globally.
In fact, there are far more pressing issues that deserve our attention right now, like a café bombing in Morocco that killed 15 people on Thursday morning, among other things.
What people fail to realize is that it’s only a wedding. At that, it’s a wedding of two people they don’t know and will likely never have a chance to meet.
Weddings between people we don’t know occur in Houston daily, and no one really cares one way or the other.
Of course, their wedding is obviously given a lot more weight because they’re royalty, but here’s the most perplexing aspect of it all — Prince William and Princess Catherine are not even American royalty — there is no royal family that belongs to America, so it makes little to no sense that everyone be so infatuated with their nuptials.
It’s safe to say that not even the English are as excited about this wedding as Americans seem to be. They aren’t even going to get a national holiday out of this event.
If you’re one of the many millions of people that woke up earlier than you needed to in order to watch the royal wedding before the sun rises, you might need to take a step back and think of other, more valuable ways you could use your time.
I agree totally with everything you said.
Exactly, weddings occur on a daily basis and the fact that people all over the world going crazy and taking this so seriously really need to check themselves. I mean it is true what you said in that the royal wedding would be given more weight because royalty involved here but at the same time, what does it do for the normal individual? ask yourself this people. How this wedding benefitting you by you giving all your attention. Don't get me wrong i am happy for the couple and i wish them all d best. In fact i did look at the wedding on the tv this morning but i certainly did not get up earlier than normal and spend my entire morning watching it. Come on people there are more pressing issues going on in this world. Give serious focus and undivided attention to where it deserves to be given.
Whatever, you sound ridiculous and bitter…
30 years ago they said the Diana – Charles wedding is a wedding of the century. And before the century ends,
the marriage broke.
And so probably this will too in the future .. who knows
Amen! http://www.jonesboro.com/newstaffy/item/2912/Much…
ill informed. we did get a national holiday. as for predicting the demise of the marriage thats just mean spirited. and given the pecadilos of people all over the world why try to bring it down without foundation.
Are royal people allowed to get divorces?
I think there is a good reason people put royalty or celebrities on pedestals, and it's because we need something to aspire too and if not aspire, then escape reality. Just because some people think they are cynical and can see this royal bandwagon doesn't mean the rest of the world can't. And just saying that there is no point in celebrating a wedding for two people one will never meet is flawed, I've never seen most of the animals on the endangered species list, so should I not care about them because they don't affect me?
I really believe that people predisposed to fascination with royalty would not be dissuaded by a simple editorial.
"It’s safe to say that not even the English are as excited about this wedding as Americans seem to be. They aren’t even going to get a national holiday out of this event."
I think you find us British (not just the English-there is Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well!), did get a holiday out of it. I was near the Abbey and Buckingham Palace and it was a great day out.
