Softball – UH in running for C-USA title; freshman pitcher nabs accolade

The Cougars will be saying farewell to five players for Senior Weekend, but they will be able to go out with a bang depending on how the weekend series goes.

UH (36-15, 16-5 Conference USA) is tied for first in the conference with Tulsa, but depending how the weekend goes UH could emerge as the regular season champion.

The Cougars will begin a three-game set with Central Florida beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cougar Softball Stadium.

“It’s tough on senior day with so many emotions that go into it,” head coach Kyla Holas said in a release. “Then you have that added pressure of needing to win all three, it’s not going to be an easy weekend. UCF took something from us a few years back that hurt really badly. They are a very good ball club that has played a great schedule. This is not something we will overlook, and we have been preparing for it all week.”

Tulsa is preparing for a three-game series with the UTEP Miners who are 1-19 in conference play. If the Golden Hurricane and the Cougars post the same results this weekend, they will finish the season as dual conference champions.

“When you get to the wire like this, this is why you play the game,” Holas said. “This is what it’s all about. This pressure and having championships on the line, if you weren’t playing for that then you aren’t playing at your very best. We’re excited for this opportunity.”

Based off her performance from April 25-May 2 freshman pitcher Diedre Outon was announced as the C-USA Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

In three games against East Carolina she recorded nine strikeouts and allowed no runs. Went 2-0 on the weekend to improve to 5-2 overall, and lowered her ERA to 1.78.
