UH finds new VP for Student Affairs

UH President Renu Khator ended the search for Vice President for Student Affairs today, announcing that J. Richard Walker will fill the position.

His hiring is pending approval from the UH System Board of Regents and will be decided at the Aug. 17 meeting. Walker was the assistance vice president for student affairs at the University of Miami since 2003.

“Throughout his career, Richard Walker has demonstrated a strong commitment to student engagement programs and problem solving to support student success,” Khator said in a press release.

“He understands the importance of multiculturalism and has interacted effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members on many issues.”

For 29 years Walker has been in administrative positions at three different universities, the last 17 at Miami. He replaces interim VP Michael Lawrence who served on an interim basis since March.

“I am definitely a student affairs educator who is student-centered,” Walker said. “To me it is about enhancing the student learning experience through curricular and co-curricular opportunities that support the academic mission of the institution.”
