Low on spaces

The University will be closing more campus parking lots this semester to accommodate the new building projects.

“Parking Lots 11A, 12B, 15D and significant portions of 12A and 15F will be closed due to stadium and Metro construction,” said Robert Browand, director of Parking and Transportation Services.

The construction has affected both students and professors, though the University has added 5,800 parking spaces and will be adding 1,500 others when the 1A parking garage is fully operational.

“UH should at least open a temporary free parking to the new parking garage as long as (students) bought a parking permit,” said history junior Sean McCravy.

McCravy wakes up at 4:30 a.m. to beat traffic and find a spot.

“It’s hard for some people who don’t have the $300 or $400 to buy a whole new parking permit for the parking garage,” McCravy said.

In a recent announcement, the University offered advice on how to combat the congestion on campus.

“Students are encouraged to use the parking at Energy Research Park, which has an abundance of spaces available, then catch a shuttle bus to campus,” said communications coordinator of Auxiliary Services Richard Zagrzecki in a press release.

“Students should consider upgrading to a garage permit.”

The release also included a list of what lots are open and their locations. The University has a live map of the campus’ parking lots, which can save students time and gas.

Though parking is scarce now, UH intends to add 3,190 more spaces than it has lost by the end of the year.

  • So easy for you to say “Upgrade to a garage permit”. People should realize we don’t have money planted at home. And parking at ERP and catching the shuttle means waking up and leaving at least half an hour earlier than usual. Most of us go without sleep through our university years anyway!

  • Even if we do park at the ERP, I waited 30 mins for the bus to come on Tuesday and 20 mins to return–and it happened to be 35 degrees and raining. There’s really no reason that UH should not have buses coming every 10 mins to pick students up. And if UH is going to continue to get rid of lots in favor of garages, make it affordable!
