Volunteering opportunities are never limited, and what better way to spend the close of summer than by showcasing your Cougar Pride and helping provide thousands of families and their children with back to school supplies.
UH will proudly host the fourth annual Mayor’s Back-To-School Fest August 16, 2014. It will take place at the Athletic Alumni Center and Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Back-to-School Fest is a partnership between UH, the Office of the Mayor and the City of Houston. They are currently looking for volunteers to help showcase the University to an anticipated 25,000 primary school students and their families.
“We are the proud host site for the event,” said Community Relations Director and direct liaison between UH and City of Houston Susie Molina. “We work in conjunction with the City of Houston’s Department of Neighborhoods to help bring this event to the Houston community. We also take this opportunity to help showcase all the programs and resources our University provides.”
Some of those programs and resources will include vision screenings, immunizations and overall health screenings.
Supplies are provided from various sponsors and community organizations involved in the event. Shell Oil Company is the primary sponsor, and together with The City of Houston, they’ll be providing 25,000 backpacks full of supplies ready for pickup by students and their families.
Students and families must pre-register for the event in order to obtain the supplies.
“The city is still looking for individual volunteers to help with the event,” Molina said.
