Cougars take time to warm up in College Classic

The Cougars had a rough outing at the 2015 Houston College Classic, coming out of the weekend with one come-from-behind win over the course of three games. The once No. 3 ranked Cougars saw themselves at the No. 8 spot through the Classic and fell hard to the No. 2 LSU Tigers and No. 11 Texas A&M Aggies as they combined for seven hits over the two games.

The Cougars opened their weekend on Friday with sophomore starting pitcher Andrew Lantrip, who threw the first complete game of his career. Lantrip allowed three earned runs on nine hits from the Tigers, but the deficit was too much for the Cougars to overcome, and he was handed his first loss of the season as well.

The Aggies proved to be a tougher challenge for the Cougars as the strong Texas A&M pitching staff held the Houston batters scoreless with just three hits. Junior starting pitcher Jake Lemoine also received his first loss of the season after allowing three runs and his error-stricken defense added three more.

Sunday’s game was the turnaround for the Cougars as they picked up an 8-6 win over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors to snap their four-game losing streak.

A 3-RBI triple from junior Justin Montemayor was the turning point for the Cougars, as it tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning. The Cougars pulled ahead in the seventh to secure the win.

Vidales and junior first baseman Chris Iriart were named to the Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team as the two combined for seven hits and 2 RBI.
