Cougars jump out early, take down Cowboys

After a successful series over the weekend, the Cougars hit the road to stretch their winning streak to four, improving their record to 27-14 with a 5-4 victory over the McNeese State at the Cowboy Diamond on Tuesday night.

Through the first three innings, the Cougars were at a stalemate against the Cowboys. The Cougars began to gain momentum at the top of the fourth, however, when junior first baseman Chris Iriart managed to reach first on a wild pitch.

Houston would score the first run of the night as freshman shortstop Connor Wong tripled to bring Iriart home. Freshman Corey Julks would ground out, but score Wong in the process for Houston’s second run of the inning. After junior third baseman Justin Montemayor and catcher Ian Rice were walked junior outfielder Ashford Fulmer would double for two RBI to put the Cougars further ahead.

The Cowboys would not go quietly though, managing to score two runs with senior David Longville on the mound.

Longville would pitch for six complete innings, allowing five hits, two runs, no walks and three strike outs during his tenure on the mound. Sophomore Marshall Kasowski would replace Longville at the beginning of the seventh inning and record 2.2 innings, two hits, two runs, no walks and four strike outs.

Junior Patrick Weigel was brought in for the bottom of the ninth to face one batter and get the save.

The Houston Cougars will continue their games on the road as they visit the leaders of the American Athletic Conference, the University of South Florida Bulls, for a conference series on April 24, 25 and 26.
