Junior Despoina Vogasari earned her first Player of the Month award for this year, following her strong performance at the Rice Invitational.

The American Athletic Conference honored Vogasari after her 3-0 in singles in the team’s first action of the year.

In her first two match-ups of the season, Vogasari swept straight sets against Fabienne Gettwart of Sam Houston State University, 6-1, 6-1, as well as Astrid Gehre of the University of Texas at Arlington, 6-2, 6-0.

She wrapped up her strong performance in singles with a three-set win over Lindsey Hodge from the rival Rice University in the semi-finals, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.

The finals of the singles were rained out on Sunday afternoon, concluding Vogasari’s tournament early, but her dominant display on the court was enough to earn her recognition from the AAC.

With this player of the month award, Vogasari adds to the list of commendations she has earned at UH, including Freshman of the Year in 2014 and Player of the Year in 2015.

Vogasari, the No. 42 ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings, will participate in the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, with her first match set for Tuesday Oct. 6, making her third appearance at the event.

The Cougars’ next, full-squad match won’t be until Oct. 22-26, when UH travels to College Station, Texas for the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship.
