Weekend preview: Women’s basketball starts AAC championship games and more

As we kick off our first weekend in March, we look to some teams that are in need of a fresh start. The men’s baseball team will look to break its four-game losing streak. Women’s basketball  finished its regular season and looks to capture the AAC Championship. The tennis team is gearing up to add to its winning streak with a couple of games, and the softball team will wrap up the 2016 tournament season.

Baseball

The No. 21 baseball team kicks off its three-game series against Baylor University as it looks to snap a four-game losing streak. Head coach Todd Whitting and the team take the field Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.

The team continues the second game of its series with Baylor Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park and finish its series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team enters the American Athletic Conference Championship tournament Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Houston enters the tournament as the No. 11 seed and will face off against No. 6 seed University of Tulsa in the first round. The matchup against the Golden Hurricane starts at 7 p.m., and the winner will move on to play the No. 3 seed, Temple University, on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Tennis

The tennis team faces off against the University of New Mexico Lobos on Saturday at 1 p.m. at John E. Hoff Courts. The team finishes the weekend Sunday morning against Brown University Bears at the Houston Country Club.

Softball

The softball team wraps up the 2016 tournament season with the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic this weekend. The Cougars welcome University of the Incarnate Word and Texas Southern for a two-day tournament.

The tournament kicks off Saturday at 11 a.m., with Houston playing back-to-back games starting at 1:30 p.m. against Incarnate Word, and ends with Texas Southern at 4 p.m. Houston finishes the tournament with another game on Sunday against Texas Southern at noon.
