UH is set to launch a new peer mentoring program, Cougar Peer Undergraduate Mentoring Program, aimed at connecting incoming students with current students who can provide support, campus knowledge and guidance as they transition to college.

The initiative is led by the Division of Student Affairs and will begin from Sept. 3 with a kickoff event from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

“Student mentorship has played a vital role in my own life and development,” said Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Donell Young. “I have seen firsthand how meaningful mentorship can be in helping students grow, build confidence and navigate their college experience.”

The program is in collaboration with Mentor Collective and partnering with the Academic Affairs Center, the Bauer College of Business and several Division of Student Affairs departments, including the Center for Student Empowerment, Veteran Services, University Career Services and Student Housing and Residential Life

The University has recruited 500 peer mentors for the program’s first year. Cougar PUMP is expected to serve approximately 3,000–5,000 incoming students each year.

“In addition to helping new students adjust to life at UH, mentors gain valuable experience themselves, including volunteer service hours, leadership and communication skills, résumé recognition, expanded campus and professional networks and professional development opportunities,” said a university spokesperson.
