Houston volleyball concluded the Flo Hyman Classic with a three-set sweep against Houston Christian at the Fertitta Center on Sept. 19.

Despite the sweep and long rallies, Houston continued to find themselves on the right side of the whistle, outnumbering the Huskies in kills by 20 and assists by 15.

Sophomore outside hitter Noemi Despaigne led the team in kills with 12 while senior outside hitter Alyssa Gonzales wasn’t far behind with 10. Graduate seventh-year middle blocker Aiden Conner led the team with seven blocks. Freshman setter Shannon Dworaczyk led the team in assists with 20.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 11-point lead in the final set to help put enough distance between them and the Huskies to clinch the sweep.

A competitive second set saw Houston Christian cut an eight-point deficit to just three points before Houston closed out the set with three straight scores, clinching it 25-19.

Despaigne added four more kills in the second set. Six different Cougars earned a kill in the second set.

The Cougars took over the first set by going on a 12-2 scoring run to gain a lead they would never relinquish, taking the set 25-14.

Jones led the team in kills in the first set with seven. Despaigne provided an additional five.

Redshirt junior outside hitter I’Onna Jones led the Huskies in kills with eight while senior middle blocker Allana Archie added five. Enisilina Savelio led Houston Christian with 21 assists.

Houston begins conference play when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the No. 22 Kansas Jayhawks on Friday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m.
