Junior transfer officially a Cougar

UH head football coach Kevin Sumlin said Friday that the NCAA eligbility center has cleared Devin Mays for practice.

Because of NCAA regulations, the 5-11 cornerback will undergo a four-day waiting period before he is allowed to practice in full pads. He particpated in seven-on-seven drills Friday, but will not be available for hard contact until at least Tuesday or Wednesday.

Mays has been rumored as UH’s potential starting right cornerback, but Sumlin has yet to announce who will start in the season opener against Northwestern State on Sept. 5.

The eligibility status of freshman receiver A.J. Dugat is still unknown, but Sumlin does not appear to be concerned.

‘That’s all over country. It’s not uncommon.,’ Sumlin told the Houston Chronicle’s Steve Campbell. ‘The fact that we’ve only got three guys at this point, it’s pretty good.’
