The women’s basketball team hits the road for the first time this season with a trip out west to take on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Tuesday night.
The Cougars displayed resiliency Sunday when the team moved to 1-0 after a narrow 83-80 victory over the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. Coming down to the wire, women’s basketball needed late jumpers from junior guard Chyanne Butler and freshman guard Jasmyne Harris to seal the victory.
Freshman Angela Harris led all Cougar scorers with an impressive 22 points against the Lions.
UNLV enters Tuesday’s matchup also at 1-0 by picking up a blowout victory in the team’s opener against Concordia University Irvine. The Rebels were led by Dakota Gonzalez, who picked up 17 points, and Katie Powell, who grabbed 11 rebounds.
Last season, the two teams met on Dec. 12 with the Rebels coming away with a 63-60 down-to-the-wire victory at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Now on UNLV’s home court, the matchup marks the first time since 1994 that the Cougars have played a game in Las Vegas.
The Rebels own the all-time series lead against the Cougars with a record of 5-1.

A win would provide a solid foundation for a season in which the Cougars are looking for vast improvements.
Women’s basketball will head further west for a game against Long Beach State University on Friday following their matchup with UNLV.
Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. from the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas.
