UH students become finalists in Microsoft contest

Computer science students Tyler Swensen, Igor Esteves de Oliveira and John Montgomery are looking forward to the opportunity of a lifetime.

The trio, who compete under the name Team Skybit Studios, have won an all-expense paid trip to San Francisco to compete in the Microsoft Imagine Cup national finals, a computer science gaming competition, from April 21 to 25. They will compete for $4,000 and the chance to be the United States’ representative in the Imagine Cup World Semi-Finals.

“Imagine Cup has really been my first time in a competitive environment where I’d be judged on all the skills I’ve been acquiring in the years of my education,” Montgomery said in a press release. “This competition takes a lot of effort, with numerous team meetings and working through one iteration after another on the game. We also had weekly online meetings with Microsoft about the business side of our game.”

The group developed a game called “Zoogi Roll” and have already moved through two rounds of competition to become finalists.
