Tennis claims one win in rain-shortened afternoon

Despite nature’s best attempt to keep play away, the Cougars kept on winning in a limited schedule on Friday at the Texas Regional Championships.

Rain pushed most of the afternoons’ action back to Saturday, but junior Despoina Vogasari found time to capture yet another win at the event.

Vogasari squared off with Olaya Garrido-Rivas of Texas Christian University and came away with the win, 7-5, 2-6, 10-6.

With the win, Vogasari improves to 6-1 this season in singles play and 8-0 at the Texas Regional Championships, after winning six straight matches last season to capture the title.

Vogasari has a spot in the round of 16 on Saturday and will be squaring off with Solomiya Zinko of Rice University.

Joining Vogasari in action will be sophomore Mina Markovic in the singles consolation bracket, and the two will combine to compete in the doubles consolation bracket as well.

Vogasari will be looking to continue her strong play and chase another tournament title, but with rain forecasted again for tomorrow, play time is up in the air.
