When I first started at UH I had just finished a year of forced creativity in an inadequate, overpriced art school. Needless to say, the last thing I wanted to do was art. I transferred and became a business major and, while it was good to leave one extreme, the business thing lasted, oh, three days. Before I took my first class here I met with the advisor of the School of Communication, got the course guide and planned my schedule accordingly. While I craved the academic classes I had been missing, something was still… missing. I was burnt out on creating, but I still enjoyed art in the broadest sense of the word: music, movies, books and exhibitions.
As a writer for The Daily Cougar, I realized that the Life ‘ Arts section of the paper had everything I was looking for. Writing about art allowed me to combine two of my interests, but writing isn’t the only way this section offers artistic release.
As the Life ‘ Arts editor, I hope to make the section a place where students of any major with any interest can go to read about art they enjoy. I want the section to be as diverse as the students who read it, hence it including a column about contemporary literature and another titled Couch Potato I want to give local musicians, artists and writers the coverage they deserve. However, this can’t be done alone. If you know of an event taking place, let me know. If you feel you’re in the best band that has ever existed, send in an album for review.
Keep an eye out for changes within the section this semester. Some are already in motion, while others are under way. A big change will be the inclusion of short fiction and poetry written by students, so get those submissions ready.
I hope this issue’s Life ‘ Arts section will serve as a makeshift guide for the fall semester, giving you a look at the larger entertainment events coming to town. It doesn’t include everything, but you can be sure that over the course of the next few months we’ll catch it all.
