Ruth Recommends: Trio blends sounds in improvisation

This week, lend your ear to international creative musicans Konk Pack and prepare yourself for a spine-tingling set as Nameless Sound kicks off its 2007-2008 concert season.

Konk Pack is a hardcore British/German trio made up of world class improvisers that work together to release a detailed stream of unhinged, unpredictable sound.

While constantly working to shift in dynamic, the group bends frequencies and sound textures with the use of the analog synthesizer, the manipulation of flat guitar and free percussion.

The trio moves with a turbulent momentum that oscillates between highly energetic spurts of sound and intricate breaks that play heavily on silence.

Roger Turner, a drummer who has worked with numerous jazz-based musicians, lends carefully placed, interspersed percussion as the trio works to maneuver its unified, intricate and at times unnerving sound through the depths of raw, energetic noise and layers of quirky, subtle touches.

Thomas Lehn, a musician who’s developed an intense work ethic throughout the years spanning improvisation, composition, activism, writing and ethnomusicology will perform analog synthesizer.

Lehn offers Konk Pack a sense of musical precision and instability, elements that have roots in his political and cultural view of music making. Lehn, a responsive, ever-shifting improvisor, works a vintage analogue synthesizer with an electric, kinetic physicality to deliver the more intricate sounds of Konk Pack.

Tim Hodgkinson, the founding member of legendary art rock band Henry Cow, will perform lap steel guitar and clarinets.

Hodginson offers an awkwardly brilliant and defiant fusion of acoustic and electronic sound, creating music in which an onslaught of discreet elements bounce around.

Konk Pack will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Audley Society, 3231 Audley. St.Tickets are $13 for general admission, $10 for students and seniors and free for everyone under 18.

This concert is part of Nameless Sound’s Andrew Mark Ladd Memorial Concert Series.
