The UH men’s cross country team raced to a fifth place finish, while the women came in 11th at the Conference USA Championships on Saturday, in Santa Teresa, N.M.
Senior men’s runner Stephen Magness finished the men’s 8K race in ninth place overall, with 25:49.8.
Sophomore Ahmed Harb finished 16th overall with 26:47.3, while fellow sophomore Daniel Martinez came in 32th with 27:50.8.
Sophomore Jessica Cook led the women, finishing 37th overall with 19:52.7.
Senior Adriane Guinn came in 54th with 20:52.7, while sophomore Erica Hannemann finished with 20:56.4, good for 56th overall.
After next week’s bye, the UH cross country teams will be headed to Fayetteville, Ark., for the NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Nov. 10.
Soccer stops skid
The Cougars (4-10-2, 0-6-1 C-USA) experienced a tough 2-0 road loss at Southern Methodist on Sunday.
UH was outshot once again 22-6, with the Mustangs (7-7-1, 3-5 -0 C-USA) tallying 10 shots on goal to the Cougars four.
Freshman forward Lauri Byrne, junior forward Christine Nieva and freshman midfielder Jessica Rathweg all recorded shots on goal
Mustang junior midfielder Marisa Schieda and freshman forward Lauren Shepherd recorded goals for SMU in the 32th and 79th minutes, respectively.
The Cougars started out the weekend in a way they haven’t since the end of September – without a loss.
They may not have lost, but unfortunately, they didn’t win either, walking away with a 0-0 double-overtime tie at Tulsa.
Junior goalkeeper Shelby Scott recorded 11 saves against Tulsa’s 18 shots in her fourth shutout this season.
Scott is now tied at 8 for the UH all-time shutout record.
Nieva had a strong return after being out for five matches with a knee injury. Nieva, Byrne and junior defender Maegan Kiphart recorded UH’s three shots on goal.
UH will conclude its regular season this weekend against Texas-El Paso on Friday and Colorado College on Sunday.
