European jazz group performs in Houston

Though Tuesdays aren’t the typical night to catch live music, tonight provides the perfect opportunity for those anxiously awaiting the weekend’s offerings. Take a hint from the Achim Kaufmann Trio – step outside your usual routine and witness the improvisational jazz group perform at 8 p.m. tonight.

Hailing from Germany and Holland, Achim Kaufmann, Frank Gratkowski and Wilbert de Joode will perform their unique brand of improvisation tonight. Blending Achim’s polyphonic pianism, a technique in which a pianist’s right and left hands operate freely from one another, Gratkowski’s spontaneity on the saxaphone and clarinet and de Joode’s bass pizzicato, the trio manages to improvise alongside one another to create music that, despite being unplanned, sounds unified. Under Achim’s direction, the three keep their individual identities as performers while playing together as one.

The trio performs at the Latham Auditorium, Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave. Admission is $10 for students and free for patrons under the age of 18. For more information, visit www.namelesssound.org.
