Editor ushers in new year with full coverage

The new year signals a victorious feeling of having conquered another year as it beckons forward motion in pursuit of new accomplish-ments. Maybe graduation is in sight or maybe you are beginning your second semester.

Either way, may this semester be a productive one that brings you closer to achieving your goals.

As a senior majoring in English, my love for writing has led me to explore many different types, from poetry to fiction and now, journalism. The Daily Cougar gives me a place to express myself and share all kinds of interesting events and important information.

That’s exactly what you can expect from your new Life ‘ Arts editor. You can look forward to coverage of everything from poetry and fiction readings to book, concert and film reviews, as well as a variety of album reviews.

I personally enjoy covering plays, especially the Alley Theatre’s productions, so my hope is that we can cover many of those.

Houston also has an abundance of museums with fascinating exhibitions that deserve to be featured. I will also keep you updated on what’s going on at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston because it’s another one of my favorite places. I plan to include coverage of plays and exhibits taking place on campus as well.

Local artists and rock bands also deserve recognition as they pour emotion into their work and use their talent to create art. A fan base is needed to thrive in these areas and my section can help.

Though attention will be called to new and exciting things, you can count on reading some previous columns, such as Couch Potato and Get Technical.

Though there is an exciting semester of Life ‘ Arts to look forward to, I am open to ideas and suggestions. If you know of anything not included in this section that you would like to see covered, I want to know.

Though my personal interest is in both classical and contemporary poetry, and you can count on more coverage of poetry readings and reviews of poetry collections, my goal is to make this section interesting for students of all majors, backgrounds and interests.

If you want to relax while you’re reading movie or music reviews or if you want to discuss literature or art, this is your section. If you like video games or hip-hop music – whatever interests or inspires you – look for it here.

If you are a movie critic, you enjoy plays or concerts, if you are a health nut or the fashion police, if you feel that UH needs regular updates of the new season of American Idol or if you would simply like to write your own column or cover events related to Life ‘ Arts, please contact me.

You can reach me at The Daily Cougar at [email protected] or (713) 743-5302, or you can always stop by Room 151 in the Communication Building.
