Faculty helps Bauer make the list

The Marketing Department at the C.T. Bauer College of Business ranks among the most productive in the country, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The department ranked ninth in a list compiled by Academic Analytics, an independent company that ranks the doctoral programs at research universities based on categories such as faculty contributions to publications, citation of publications, federal research funding and honorary awards.

The ranking reflects the quality of marketing faculty and students as well as their commitment to their work, Edward Blair, chairman of the department, said.

"We have smart, high-quality faculty here," he said. "What students learn here will be able to help them stay competitive in today’s job market."

Blair said that the department also boasts the single best sales program in the world.

"Any students in selling are getting the best experience there is," he said. "We have more corporate partners, more scholarships – more anything – than any other sales program out there."

Marketing professor Betsy Gelb said the ranking would help Bauer recruit even more qualified faculty, who should draw more students to the program.

"We out-recruit a lot of schools. People look at the direction our school is headed and it’s very much upward," she said. "Whoever we hire will be better because of this ranking, and in turn they will make us a better program. People want to go where there are well-known faculty (members)."

Gelb said that the booming job market in Houston has also helped the department by attracting students and faculty with technical expertise.

"Houston is very much a business-to-business marketing town, and marketing is a sensible concentration for students with technical backgrounds," she said.

Academic Analytics ranks departments according to its Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. The index compiles information from over 7,400 doctoral programs representing 375 institutions across the nation, assigning numerical values to each program’s contributions to the categories mentioned above and ranking them accordingly.

The marketing department at Pennsylvania State’s Smeal College of Business ranked first, while departments at the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern University placed second and third.

UH ranked third in the country for number of journal publications per faculty member, fourth for citations per faculty member and fifth for the percentage of faculty with a journal publication.
