Defense key for UH softball’s weekend

After taking four wins against Nicholls State on Friday and McNeese State on Saturday, UH heads to the Crowne Plaza Classic this weekend at Cougar Softball Stadium.

Although the Cougars are undefeated on the season, head coach Kyla Holas said the team needs to make defensive adjustments for UH to continue its winning streak.

"We had some really great aggressive base running," she said. "Our biggest problem is defensive errors. We cannot give our opponents unearned opportunities."

The Cougars will face DePaul University, Army and Texas A’M Corpus Christi on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Cougars, who are ranked 23rd in the nation by the USA Today/NFCA Division 1 Top 25 poll, are gearing up to face some challenging teams after victories in their season openers, Holas said.

"(DePaul) is a very tough team to beat and tends to be very well-rounded on both sides of the ball," she said. "This will have to be our ‘A’ performance if we want a chance at them."

The Cougars will have to pay attention to how Texas A’M Corpus Christi and the Black Knights play in their game against each other Friday before UH faces them Saturday, Holas said.

"Texas A’M Corpus Christi has a new coaching staff, so we don’t have a clear picture of the adjustments they have made," she said.

Several Cougar upperclassmen put in strong performances against Nicholls and McNeese.

Junior catcher Elaina Nordstrom hit a homerun against the Cowgirls, and Holas said junior outfielder Laurie Wagner had a great weekend at the plate.

While senior pitcher Barbie Love did not allow any runs in Game 2 against McNeese, freshman infielder Jennifer Klinkert hit her first career home run in the same game.

"(Love) worked through some uncontrollables and put in a solid performance on the mound," Holas said.

As the weekend approaches, Holas encourages UH students to support the Cougars by attending games.

"We play a very different kind of game (than any other sport)," Holas said. "It is fast and the fans get a chance to be right up on the action.

"Our players are very personable, and they are the kind of people you want to pull for and can get behind."
