UH tennis narrowly escape Bearkats’ claws for a win

The Cougars found themselves fighting for another win against Sam Houston on Wednesday, but the outcome was good as the Cougars squeaked by with a 4-3 decision, advancing their record to 9-6 for the season.

"It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win, and right now we’ll take wins however and whenever we can get them," UH head coach John Severance said.

Houston junior Lynley Wasson and senior Leila Salek won the No. 2 doubles competition, beating Bearkat junior Roxana Martinez and freshman Stasa Vujosevic 8-1.

Juniors Jordan McCombs and Vicky Simpson had to battle against Sam Houston juniors Eleonora Kuruc and Patricia Manzur but prevailed in the No. 3 doubles match 8-6.

Freshmen Lucy Forward and Isabella Glinska fell short in the No. 1 doubles match, 8-2.

During the singles matches, Houston lost two tiebreakers in the No.1 and No. 5 singles.

"The disappointing part of it is that we didn’t win more matches and we made it a lot more close then I believe it should have been," coach Severance said.

Salek finessed her way to a win against Kuruc 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles competition while Wasson demolished Vujosevic in the No. 4 competition, finishing 6-0, 6-1.

With the Cougars winning the No. 2, 4 and 6 singles matches quickly, they were in the lead 4-1 for the win but lost the last three.

Forward fell short against junior Irina Sotnikova in the No. 1 singles competition 7-6 (6-2) 7-5. Glinska lost to Bearkats junior Peta Taylor 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles match.

On Monday the Cougars conference match at John E. Hoff Courts against the University of Central Florida was cancelled because of weather conditions and will not be rescheduled.

The Cougars will hit the courts again this weekend in Alabama, competing at noon Saturday against the University of Alabama. Houston will also travel to Birmingham, Ala. to challenge Samford University at noon Sunday.
