Five Minutes of Fame: Sophmore’s voice needs a rest

Eli Jabbe: So, what are you doing up here at school on a Sunday?

Caleb Sturgis: I’m about to go to the music library.

Jabbe: OK. So what instrument do you play?

Sturgis: I study voice, but I also play the piano.

Jabbe: So after you finish school you want to perform both?

Sturgis: Yeah. Do y’all know Billy Joel or Barry Manilow? I’d love to do that kind of stuff. The chances are slim, but…

Jabbe: The next Billy Joel?

Sturgis: Yeah. I’m gonna try.

Jabbe: Are you from Houston originally?

Sturgis: Nah. Do y’all know where Lake Jackson is? That’s where I’m from, but I live in Katy now.

Jabbe: How many years have you been studying music before you came to UH?

Sturgis: I got involved starting with my sophomore year in high school, at the age of 14. Right now I am a Music sophomore here at UH.

Jabbe: So you do concerts with the Moores School of Music?

Sturgis: Yeah. Did y’all hear about "Carmina Burana?" The one that goes (starts humming).

Jabbe: Yeah. That famous song. One of my favorites.

Sturgis: That’s the most recent one, we just did it on Friday… my voice is very tired.

Jabbe: Anything else you want to say?

Sturgis: Hey man, you’re the one asking the questions… I’m just here.

Jabbe: OK. Are you ready for the summer??Sturgis: Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a good summer.

Mauricio Lazo: What are your plans for the summer?

Sturgis: I plan to get a good-paying job and buy a keyboard. What about y’all?

Lazo: My plans are summer school and work, I guess.

Jabbe: School, and – actually I’m done with school. I plan on working and, you know, doing a little traveling.

Sturgis: Do y’all know Kelsie Hahn and Ronnie Turner?

Jabbe: Yeah we know Ronnie, and Kelsie… she’s the boss.
