Staff Editorial: Report card applauds interactive, successful students

100 Days Survey: A

The majority of the responses to UH President Renu Khator’s 100 Days Survey were from students, and that’s exactly what this University needs to see. Students should be the No. 1 priority of UH, even before flagship status, and students getting actively involved in the planning and decision-making here will go a long way to ensure they remain the focus.

We hope to continue to see student input at every level of the University, and we await the University’s response. We urge Khator and every administrator in the University to take the concerns and ideas of the survey to heart and start presenting plans, strategies and solutions to top concerns as soon as possible.

Questionable professor practices: F-

The evidence against botany professor Alfred Loeblich doesn’t look good.

Interviews and an audit obtained by The Daily Cougar indicate a chain of events that reflects poorly on the professor: he tells his students to buy a packet from local business A+ Review, and within a few weeks the students are called with offers to buy test questions and answers. It is unclear if this practice is still ongoing, but it doesn’t help that after one brief interview, Loeblich did not respond to months of requests for a follow-up in light of new information. We wanted to give him a chance to respond. We probably gave him too many chances.

Academic honesty is a serious consideration at any university. The University must continue to monitor these allegations and enforce discipline and academic honesty among its faculty. The Student Government Association took the first step in condemning these practices last semester – now it’s up the University to bring the lesson home.

Donnie Avery: A

The former Cougar wide receiver is now a Ram.

St. Louis selected Donnie Avery with their team’s first pick in the NFL Draft on Sunday. Avery was the second pick in the second round and 33rd overall.

He follows in the footsteps of Kevin Kolb, former Cougar quarterback who was selected 36th by Philadelphia in last year’s draft and was also the Eagles’ first pick.

When former Cougars play in the NFL, it showcases the kind of talent Houston produces, creating more Cougar fans on a national level and attracting future recruits. It brings attention to not only the football program, but also the University itself as an institution of high-quality education and athletics. We applaud Avery and his hard work, and wish him all the best.
