RUTH RECOMMENDS: Feed the soul on a student budget

After forking over money for booze and Halloween costumes this weekend, many students will resort to Ramen as a dietary staple. But eating cheap noodles with plasticware doesn’t have to be the highlight of your week.

Students looking for inexpensive diversions to fill their weeknights don’t have to look any further.

ArtStorm will host a showing of Cartune Xprez, a 70-minute collection of short animated videos crafted by up-and-coming filmmakers and artists of international esteem, at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at 4878 Caroline St.

For only $5 patrons can check out the animated shorts along with the Houston debut of multimedia dance duo Hooliganship.

The shorts will feature the imaginative works of animation artists Bruce Bickford, Eric Dyer, Shana Moulton and Takeshi Murata. In addition to the cartoon, the audience will have the chance to witness the artists perform "Realer," their latest piece, through 3D glasses.

Painter and silk-screen artist Philip Durbin’s latest exhibition A Coarse Portal will also be open for viewing at this event.

Free beer will be provided. Tickets for Cartune Xprez will be available at the door. For more information, visit www.artstormhouston.com or call (713) 568-8174.

Those suffering from election fatigue on Tuesday night can stop by Notsuoh, 314 Main St., and check out three bands for only $3.

The Terrordactyls, a duo hailing from Vashon Island, Washington, will perform their concoction of acoustic power pop along with opening performances by Houston-based indie bands the Wild Moccasins and Buxton starting at 8 p.m.
