Athletic Dept. markets competition

As the UH football team gets ready to play Memphis’ at noon’ Saturday, tickets for the game are on sale, and the Athletic Department is offering a contest for organizations.

The Athletic Department marketing office decided to hold a competition for student organizations to promote and encourage student attendance for the final two regular season games.

‘The Athletic Department always is looking to make the best atmosphere for students at all of our athletics events. We are trying to promote events that are fun for student organizations and their members and award the group that has the highest attendance,’ sports information director Jeff Conrad said.

The student organization with the biggest turnout at the game will win a suite at a men’s basketball game and pizza for those who attended.

To be eligible, student organizations must sign in with the names of their members at Gate 10, near the student entrance, as they walk into Robertson Stadium. The Cougars will play Memphis’ at noon’ Saturday and Rice at 7 p.m.’ Nov. 28.

Conrad said the exposure is good for the University.

‘We are confident that the more students visit Robertson Stadium and see our football team, (the more they) will want to come back in the future and see more,’ Conrad said.

Conrad said he doesn’t expect the Cougars’ 37-32 loss against Central Florida’ last Saturday’ to decrease student attendance.

‘The Cougars are ranked among the nation’s top-25 teams and feature an exciting brand of football that is entertaining for all fans,’ Conrad said. ‘This looks to be one of the most successful seasons in school history, and we hope all Cougar fans can come out, enjoy and be proud of their team.

‘With two more regular-season games against conference rivals, we need all the support we can get, every game.’

Each student may purchase up to four guest tickets at a discounted price of $10 each for the remaining two home games.

Normally, student guest tickets for football games are not available for purchase until the week of the game. This was changed for the game against Rice because of the approaching Thanksgiving holiday.

Athletic Department officials said they elected to make student guest tickets available for the game against Rice on Monday for students’ convenience.

Tickets for both games can be purchased with a valid Cougar Card at the ticket office in the Athletics/Alumni Center.
