I am writing to express disappointment at The Daily Cougar’s lack of serious articles covering national and world affairs that are not on the Opinion page.
I understand it’s a very specialized newspaper, but I also think that you have a responsibility, as a major conduit of information in a place of higher learning, to dedicate newsprint to investigating the important issues of our day.
Again, I stress, not on the Opinion page, but researched, balanced analysis of issues such as the two wars the U.S. is engaged in, global warming, the economy and health care.
To take a local example, you might have fact-checked the actual claims that the pro-life group of protesters were making about abortion, instead of publishing, again, an opinion piece; you could have surveyed campus response or interviewed opposing protesters.
Since UH’s new mission is to attain flagship status, it would be prudent to consider the future of its newspaper. I think The Daily Cougar could broaden its range and grow as an institution if you expanded coverage of issues such as these.
