Chili’s Too showing more concern for students than The Den

Last time I visited The Den, I saw its motto on the cash register’s computer screen: ‘Lowering GPAs since 12/2008.’

What kind of mixed messages are being sent here?

UH is promoting academic excellence and flagship status, but has sponsor relations with a bar due to its location and its promotions during football games and other sporting events.

I have witnessed excessive drinking at The Den, heard conversations about marijuana use and the evolution of promiscuous sexual ‘hook-ups’ that have begun there.

Moreover, going into finals week, The Den offered free drinks after the football game Saturday. Way to keep students on track, right?

I particularly like Chili’s Too, which is located on the bottom floor of the University Center. It has karaoke (sometimes), friendly staff and patrons, less excessive drinking, more intellectual discussions, better networking opportunities and it accepts Cougar Cash.

Chili’s Too offers many opportunities for constructive excursions for students when they are not studying. Why not give it the promo at the sporting events, instead of The Den?

There has been a lot of talk about banning smoking on the UH campus. Who is brave enough to push an initiative to cut down on the excessive drinking that occurs on campus?

Ask yourself which is more dangerous: drinking and driving amongst college students, or smoking on campus.

Last time I checked, smoking was not linked with promiscuous sex or violence.
