Online games enjoyable in moderation

Today’s society is one in which new and improved technology is accessible at all times. Many adolescents and young adults can easily become addicted to online video games, which are becoming more intense and realistic. The type of online game that causes most of these addictions is called massively multiplayer online role-playing games; they prevent participation in school, work and other social activities.

These games usually attract individuals who suffer from low self-esteem and have a need for social interaction. The games allow individuals to envelop themselves in their own imaginary world, where they can create their own character and earn skills and abilities.

Classifying a gaming addiction is similar to any other addiction: the inability to stop the activity, neglect of family and friends, problems with school or job, changes in sleep patterns, and even feeling empty and depressed when away from the computer.

People become addicted to these games by their own need to substitute real-life human connections, which they cannot achieve normally. They are able to make friends by playing through a virtual fantasy world where the Internet connects real people.’

The source of the aforementioned overactive information is the Open Computing Facility, an all-volunteer, student-run, student-initiated service group dedicated to free computing for all students, faculty and staff at the University of California at Berkeley.

While it is true that any repeated activity can be called an addiction, the OCF compares the addiction of MMORPGs to substance addiction, and how they are one and the same.

This is obviously not true because people do not get physically harmed while playing these games and no one can overdose on video games.’

The convenience of video games is an escape from problems; they can relieve feelings of anxiety, guilt, helplessness and depression.’

When and if these games get in the way of important events such as school, work or even cause the deterioration of personal relationships, then players should definitely cut down on the amount of time they invest in the game. Other than that, anything that makes you happy or gives any sort of entertainment is a beneficial activity, especially when it involves friends and family.’

Know the limits of addiction so you don’t become a recluse. Remember, whatever works to make you happy as long as it’s in moderation is always a good thing.
