Landry adjusts to new teammates, readies to make another championship run
Q: There are a lot of new faces on this year’s squad. How is practice going so far?
A: It’s going well. We have to learn the fundamentals a little bit, the basics. We have to get our chemistry on point. We just have to play basketball and glue together.
Q: The team lost many of the key players from last season’s C-USA championship team, how are you adjusting to that as the point guard and leader of this team?
A: I have to adjust a lot. Before there was wisdom on the floor. Now, we’re out there teaching a lot of freshmen and a lot of newcomers — people that have never played together. It’s tough. Just playing with a bunch of new people is tough because you always have those secret weapons like on the wing you’ll have a shooter, or Courtney or Lesslee, I know what she could do. Now we’re trying to learn how to spread our talents and learn about each other. It’s tough, but it’s getting better.
Q: Who has impressed you so far through one week of practice?
A: Michelle White and “Homeschool” (Terran Alford). If Terran’s on the other team, she’s an x-factor; Terran’s getting every rebound. She’s pushing hard. She’s going full speed the whole time. I mean she really stepped up. And Michelle White really stepped up a lot this year. We had her last year, but she’s showing her skills this year.
Q: What are the keys to success for you this season?
A: Running. We just need to run the floor and talk. We have to get our chemistry better. That will be the biggest thing.
Q: What are your expectations and goals for the team this year?
A: To do what we did last year. It’s always good to go undefeated. It’s always good to get a ring. It felt good. Once you get it, you don’t want to settle for less. Our goal this year is to win conference, make it to the NCAA Tournament, win the the Conference USA Tournament. Our goals are still the same and we’re trying to go after them.
