Redshirt junior quarterback David Piland was named the Cougars’ starter on Friday by head coach Tony Levine.
Freshman John O’Korn will serve as the team’s backup, but both will play in the Aug. 30 season opener against Southern at Reliant Stadium.
Piland passed for 2,929 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. In two stints as the Cougars’ starter, Piland has a 6-12 record.
Last season, O’Korn threw for 2,552 yards with 22 touchdowns and only four interceptions while leading St. Thomas Aquinas to the Florida Class 7A state title as a senior.
