With the win against Rutgers last weekend, the Cougars, along with two other American Athletic Conference teams, have captured six season wins, making them bowl-eligible. UCF and Louisville join UH in bowl eligibility with UCF in a tie for first with UH and Louisville trailing just behind, having lost one conference game.
Scores around the American Athletic:
Playing like conference leaders, UCF and UH both crushed their opponents Saturday. UCF defeated Connecticut 62-17 and the Cougars defeated Rutgers 49-14. Louisville travelled to South Florida and came out victorious, winning 34-3. SMU improved to 2-1 in conference play with its 59-49 win against Temple.
Offensive Player of the Week:
Senior SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert completed 37 of 53 passes for a record-setting 538 yards. Gilbert was key in helping the Mustangs come back from a 28-7 deficit by throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for 97 yards and two more touchdowns. Gilbert currently leads the nation in total offense with 408.3 yards per game and was also named Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Sophomore free safety Trevon Stewart helped lead UH in forcing six turnovers in a victory against Rutgers. Along with a game-high 10 tackles, Stewart was credited with forcing a fumble, an interception and a fumble recovery. Stewart is top in the American and second nationally with four fumble recoveries this season.
Special Teams Player of the Week:
UCF junior kicker Shawn Moffitt helped UCF remain undefeated in conference play by scoring 14 points in the Knights’ win over Connecticut. Moffitt was perfect on PATs, making all eight field goals. He also kicked for 50 and 35 yards. He has connected on all nine of his field goal attempts.
