Various organizations gathered around Philip Guthrie Hoffman Hall on April 17 to support breast cancer awareness.
One organization, the fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi, set a fundraising record of about $5,000 for breast cancer last year.
“We’re all affected by (breast cancer),” sports administration junior and vice president of Alpha Epsilon Pi Garrett Heller said. “Last year, one of our alumni, Mike Brown, helped set up our philanthropy for breast cancer.”
Another source of donations for Alpha Epsilon Pi’s charity is sponsorships. Local businesses help Alpha Epsilon Pi in its mission.
According to the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths throughout Texas. Harris County in particular is a large part of a Texas region where the mortality rate of breast cancer, adjusted to the U.S. population in 2000, ranges from 25.1 percent to 26.5 percent.
Houston is active in both combating breast cancer and spreading awareness. The annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the recent Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, and the world-renowned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center’s research efforts all serve as examples.
Why did you cover this and not Sigma Chi’s philanthropy 2 weeks ago which raised over $21,000 for Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
