SFAC: UC gets new name, date for phase two grand opening

The University Center will start to be known as the Student Center on Jan. 1, according to the UC’s presentation to SFAC on Tuesday. The group is asking for the same $901,656 base allocation that they were granted last year.

Describing the UC as a potential “home away from home”, director of UC facilities and operations Cheryl Grew-Gillen updated the committee on various improvements that were made to the UC including moving student life offices into the UC North, prepping for phase two and installing a marquee. There are also security improvements including 60 security cameras that are going to be monitored by UHPD and 24/7 access to the UC with a Cougar Card.

“I am really pleased that we have been able to be successful,” Grew-Gillen said.

A special report was also given on the status of the UC’s Phase Two, which is set to open on Jan. 21. SFAC members were given a tour of the new facilities during a presentation, which included a first look at the Legacy Lounge, the new location of Shasta’s Cones and four study rooms that groups of three or more students can reserve for two hours.
