The Cougars previous two losses have come down to the final play of the game and Saturday’s 38-31 loss against the Cincinnati Bearcats was no different.
Despite a career-high 360 passing yards from sophomore quarterback Greg Ward Jr. and a sixth game with over 100 rushing yards from junior running back Kenneth Farrow, Houston’s offense never managed to take the lead over Cincinnati.
Cincinnati opened the scoring with 10 minutes left in the first quarter, but Houston quickly answered back with a nine-yard rushing touchdown from Farrow to tie the game.
The game slowed late in the first as the scoring didn’t pick back up until midway through the second quarter. Cincinnati went up with another touchdown to be followed by a season-high rush from Kenneth Farrow of 58-yards, setting Houston up for a 44-yard field goal from junior kicker Kyle Bullard.
As the second quarter came to a close, Cincinnati had taken a 21-10 lead. Despite the 11 point deficit, Farrow had made the most of his opportunities as he accumulated 113 rushing yards in just the first half, becoming the American Athletic Conference’s leading running back with six games with over 100 yards in a season.
The third quarter opened with back and forth scoring including a 40-yard touchdown run from Ward and a monster 89-yard open field touchdown for senior receiver Markeith Ambles.
As the game clock hit its final seconds, the Cougars saw themselves in a position they had been in twice before this season as they were down seven points. Set up in the red zone, four downs were not enough for the Cougars to get the ball into the end zone as they fell 38-31.
I blame the moderators over at the coogfans forum for this loss and for this season. They and their draconian, arbitrary and unfair moderation policies have demoralized the entire team.
What else is new? Missed tackles, missed coverages, dropped td passes, no pass rush, missed interceptions….then play with all your heart when you are down 18 pts with not enough time
The little team that could not. UH Football. 2 years in a row.
