The Cougars clinched their first regular-season conference title in thirteen years on Friday with a 3-1 win over UConn.

Junior starting pitcher Kyle Dowdy went six strong innings, striking out four while allowing just one run on three hits.

With the win, Dowdy’s record improves to 8-2 on the season, with a 2.77 ERA, with 60 strikeouts this year.

The Cougars capitalized with three runs off of six hits on the day, highlighted by RBI from junior right-fielder Kyle Survance, junior second-baseman Kyle Survance, and freshman left-fielder Corey Julks.

The bullpen pitched well in relief, as three pitchers combined for 3.0 innings of two-hit baseball, while allowing no runs.

UConn was able to put up their only run of the night in the top of the seventh inning, but sophomore Marshall Kasowski and freshman Aaron Fletcher combined to get Houston out of the inning, and continued pitching strong for the Coogs.

With the win, Houston clinched not only the regular-season conference title, but the first seed in the AAC tournament, which will be hosted Clearwater, Fla.

Houston faces off with UConn in the third and final game of the series on Saturday, their last game of the regular season.
