Members of the Cougar women’s tennis team got off to a hot start at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships on Thursday.

Both junior Despoina Vogasari and sophomore Mina Markovic were looking to capitalize on their opportunity, with Vogasari looking to defend her title from last season.

Despite some strong play in the first round, Markovic found herself outsted from the tournament unable to muster a rally as she fell 6-2, 6-3.

Vogasari was seeded third at the tournament, earning herself a bye until the round of 64. When her time came, she made the most of it.

She began her title defense with a strong win, 7-6, 6-2, over the No. 42-ranked Jacobea Junger from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

With the win, Vogasari captured her 60th career singles victory at UH, as well as earned herself a spot in the round of 32 on Friday.

Vogasari and Markovic will also hit the court together in the doubles consolation bracket on Friday, and Markovic will compete in the singles consolation bracket.
