Men’s basketball earns spot to National Invitational Tournament

Despite missing out on the NCCA Tournament, the men’s basketball team earned a bid to play in the National Invitational Tournament against the Georgia Institute of Technology on Wednesday.

In the second year under head coach Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars earned their first bid into the NIT since 2006.

The Cougars head into the tournament with a 22-9 record while Georgia Tech heads in with a 19-14 record.

UH is coming off a quarterfinals loss to Tulane University in the American Athletic Conference tournament.

The Cougars are the 5th seed in Region 3 of the bracket, in a field of 32 teams.

The last time UH made an appearance in the NIT, it earned a win in the first round before losing in the second round.

This is also the Cougars 10th appearance at the NIT, having previously reached the quarterfinals twice and the finals once.

Houston’s last appearance in a postseason tournament was in the CBI in 2013, where they defeated the University of Texas.

The Cougars and Yellowjackets play on Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
