After their second conference series with a three-game matchup against the 23rd-ranked University of South Florida Bulls, the Cougars return home to host the McNeese State University Cowgirls on Wednesday night.
The Cougars are returning home after a 1-2 series loss against the Bulls. But by capturing a win in the series finale on Sunday, the Cougars snapped the Bulls’ 23-game win streak and took a win over a 31-win team.
UH dropped the first two games of the series against USF by a combined score of 10-3, but followed with a rally for a 5-2 win on Sunday.
The Cougars were blanked in the opener on Friday, tallying just two hits against the Bulls’ strong pitching. While their bats heated up in the Saturday game as they pushed three runs across on seven hits, the Cougars were doubled up by the Bulls as they plated six runs, including four in the bottom half of the first inning.
Senior center fielder Katie St. Pierre had three hits in four plate appearances on Saturday, and stole two bases to bring her season total to 15.
Freshman right fielder Elise LeBeouf had two hits on the day, driving in two runs as well as scoring a run herself.
In the series cap on Sunday, the Cougars jumped on the Bulls early in the third inning and never looked back after putting up three runs in the frame.
Freshman pitcher Savannah Heebner and junior pitcher Shelby Miller combined to pitch all seven innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs.
Going into Wednesday’s game against McNeese State, UH sits at 17-18 overall and 2-4 in conference play. McNeese State enters with a 26-7 overall record and an 11-1 conference record.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday night at Cougar Softball Stadium.
