After a neutral-field win over the University of Texas Longhorns on Tuesday, the 25th-ranked Cougars are hitting the road to take on the University of Connecticut Huskies in a three-game series this weekend.

With the win on Tuesday, the Cougars improved to 20-12 overall this season and jumped to a three-game win streak.

A dominant effort from the pitching staff helped propel the Cougars to the win, as redshirt junior Bubba Maxwell, freshman Trey Cumbie and junior Nick Hernandez combined for nine innings of five-hit baseball, allowing just two earned runs and one walk compared to seven strikeouts on the night.

Senior catcher Jacob Campbell and designated hitter and redshirt senior Michael Pyeatt tallied two hits on offense each, with Pyeatt adding an RBI, while sophomore center fielder Zac Taylor went 2-4 from the plate, scoring two runs.

Senior third baseman Justin Montemayor proved the difference-maker for the Cougars on offense, as he had the game-winning RBI in the seventh inning and also drew a walk during the game.

Cumbie picked up his first win in a Cougar uniform, while Hernandez managed his sixth save of the season.

The Cougars will resume play in the American Athletic Conference with a three-game series against the UConn Huskies in Storrs, Connecticut. The Huskies are 2-3 in conference play so far this season, coming off a 1-2 series loss against the University of Cincinnati Bearcats last weekend.

First pitch in Friday’s game between the Cougars and Huskies is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST, with the Saturday game scheduled for a noon start. The series wraps on Sunday with first pitch planned for 11 a.m.
