Olympic medalist, former astronaut among visiting lecturers this week

A week packed full of events on campus sees a lecture from a former-NASA astornaut and a talk from an Olympic medalist.

Monday: Author Visit: Dave Isay

UH Hilton Hotel, Waldorf-Astoria Ballroom

6 – 7:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the Provost Summer Read Program, Dave Isay, author of Listening is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life, will give a lecture discussing his new book, which celebrates the diversity among humans and their overall connection to each other. Isay is also the founder of StoryCorps and the recipient of numerous broadcasting honors, including six Peabody Awards and a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship.

Tuesday: Skills/Traits Energy Employers Value: A Panel Discussion

Engineering Building 2, Room W122

6 – 7:30 pm

Students are encouraged to learn more about the energy industry from UH alums and prominent Houstonians in the energy sector during this panel discussion. Sponsored by the UH Energy Assocation, there will be a networking mixer catered by Chick-Fil-A after the event with the speakers including Shell Oil Company, CenterPoint Energy, Deloitte and Touche Fugro Marine GeoServices.

Wednesday: CDI Speaker Series: Olympic Medalist Anthony Ervin

Student Center South Theater

6 – 7 p.m.

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion has organized for Olympic gold medalist Anthony Ervin to speak on campus. Ervin will share his inspirational personal journey that involves becoming a Olympic gold medalist, retiring at 22 at the height of his career and then his subsequent series of challenges with mental health, drug addiction and connecting to his cultural heritage.

Thursday: “Dancing at Lughnasa”

UH Jose Quintero Theatre

8 – 10 p.m.

Written by Brian Friel and directed by Carolyn Boone, the School of Theatre and Dance is sponsoring their rendition of the award-winning play at the Quintero Theatre. The plot revolves around five unmarried sisters in a small village in Ireland in l936 whose lives are interrupted by the music on the radio, inspiring hope of a larger world. For the general public, the price is $20 a ticket, $15 for UH faculty, staff and alumni, $12 for seniors and $10 for students.

Friday: Former-NASA Astronaut Leroy Chiao Delivers Lecture

UH College of Architecture Theater, Room 150

4 – 6 p.m.

Sponsored by the Cullen College of Engineering, former NASA Astronaut and International Space Station commander Leroy Chiao will visit UH to give a lecture about his life’s work. Chiao works in business, consulting, executive coaching and space education. Chiao holds appointments at Rice University and the Baylor College of Medicine, and is an adviser to the Houston Association for Space and Science Education. Price of attendance is free and all students are encouraged to attend.
