Navigating the UH campus means knowing who to go to in times of need. There are various networks to ensure the safety and wellness of all students.
Counseling and Psychological Services
An immediate support crisis line is available through Counseling and Psychological Services at any time. CAPS is open for in-person consultations at the Health 2 office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and anyone can contact them if they are concerned about another student. They can be reached at 713-743-5454.
Additionally, CAPS provides one-on-one counseling for students seeking personal growth, coping strategies for emotional distress or a deeper understanding of their well-being.
Group therapy is available for those who want to participate in ongoing groups during the academic semester, allowing students to learn new ways to cope, behave and interact with others.
Couples counseling is provided by CAPS for those who are having issues with their romantic partner or if the relationship issues are the main source of the student’s unhappiness. A counselor will be able to observe and help shape the way the student and their partner interact for the better, in terms of communication and behavior patterns.
UH Care Team
In cases of broader academic, behavioral or emotional distress, the UH Care Team will step in to provide proactive community support. The team assesses students through online referral forms.
Sexual Misconduct Support Services
Staff members at Sexual Misconduct Support Services assist students with confidential advocacy. They are located at Student Center South Room 256 and can be reached at 832-842-6183. SMSS helps students with emotional support, safety planning and understanding the reporting process.
This confidential resource supports those who have been impacted by any form of sexual misconduct, including sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking and intimate partner violence.
University of Houston Police Department
Physical and transit safety is provided by the UH Police Department, located on 4051 Wheeler Ave. with a substation located in the Welcome Center. Students can report crimes directly through the UHPD portal or by calling 713-743-3333.
For those feeling unsafe while walking, UHPD provides security escorts to accompany students to their start and end destinations on campus.
Cougar Ride
Cougar Ride is an after-hours transportation service. They will provide rides to and from all campus shuttle stops, as well as the MD Anderson Library, Cougar Village and Moody Towers.
Their operational hours are Monday through Thursday 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Students can access Cougar Ride through the UH GO app.
Stay Cougar S.A.F.E.
Bringing all these distinct emergency and safety divisions together, Stay Cougar S.A.F.E is a digital platform. The campus-wide initiative is an online hub to connect all students to direct UHPD’s Fire and Life Safety, Office of Emergency Management, Environmental Health Safety, Automotive and Fleet Management and Risk Management.
Through the website, students can find a quick link to all the emergency call boxes across campus. Additionally, the hub contains a link to Bikeep, for information on registration and locking student bikes.
Student Health Center
For the quickest way to care in everyday life, the Student Health Center is located in the Health 2 building. The doors are open to routine check-ups, well-woman exams, mental health support and prescriptions.
The Health Center can be reached at 713-743-5151 and the pharmacy at 713-743-5125.
A.D. Bruce Religion Center
For students seeking spiritual guidance centered on their well-being, the A.D. Bruce Religion Center provides spiritual support for diverse faith traditions.
