Preview: Houston faces off against Southern to keep winning streak alive

After a win against Oregon State in their first home game of the year, the Houston Cougars will be facing off against the Southern University Jaguars in their second game of the season.

Hailing from the Southwestern Athletic Conference, the Southern Jaguars are 1-1 heading into TDECU Stadium on Sept. 12. 

Southern has a chance to upset the Cougars, with their 34-15 victory over Kentucky State University showing the Jaguars can dominate on the field. Houston still has a chance to keep its win streak alive, but Southern will be a hurdle that could stop the Cougars. 

Houston’s keys to victory

Southern’s recent performance has a lot to say about their offense, as their victory against KSU had many offensive drives that saw success through the air. 

Sophomore quarterback Christian Johnson has a 200-yard passing game against KSU making him a threat to a struggling Houston secondary.

Southern also had a strong running game against KSU, with great success when it came to piercing through the KSU defensive line. Junior running back Trey Holly was leading the charge for the Jaguars, having 120 total yards and two touchdowns for the night. 

Houston’s defensive line will definitely be a point of interest heading into the game, but the weakest part of Houston’s defense is the secondary. After struggling to keep the Oregon State offense from scoring the previous week, the secondary will have a hard time if it isn’t ready to handle this Southern offense. 

What’s next?

Houston is heading into this game as the favorite to win, but Southern’s players will put up a fight at TDECU. As Houston’s second home game this season, the game will be a test to see if the Cougars can keep their home-field advantage. 

Time will tell whether Houston can keep their streak alive or Southern will take over TDECU as the winner.
