The Houston Cougars women’s soccer team closed off their final home game with an important 2-0 victory over the No. 15 Kansas Jayhawks on Friday, Oct. 30, at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
Kansas entered the matchup ranked No. 15 nationally and looked to establish control early. The Jayhawks created several attacking opportunities, including a chance from sophomore forward Jordan Rowan that led to a shot by sophomore midfielder Marit McLaughlin.
However, junior goalkeeper Sierra McCluer made crucial goal-line saves to keep the match scoreless.
Houston gradually found its footing offensively, with junior midfielder/forward Skylar Miller helping create opportunities in the attacking third. Despite Kansas earning five corner kicks in the opening half, Houston’s defense remained organized and limited the Jayhawks to just three shots before halftime.
The Cougars entered the second half with a defined attacking approach. At the 46th minute, graduate defender Ella Morgan opened the scoring with a right-footed finish into the top-right corner. Miller assisted on the goal after delivering the pass that allowed Morgan to put Houston ahead.
The goal provided Houston with the momentum it needed, but Kansas continued to search for an equalizer. Senior goalkeeper Sophie Dawe made several important saves, including stops on attempts from sophomore forward Samira Minor and Miller, to keep the Jayhawks within reach.
Kansas junior midfielder Jillian Gregorski also looked to create opportunities, but McCluer remained steady in goal. The junior goalkeeper recorded two saves, helping Houston maintain its advantage.
With Kansas pushing for an equalizer, Houston found another opportunity to extend its lead. At the 78th minute, senior midfielder Ava Shannon scored an unassisted goal into the bottom-left corner. Shannon’s finish gave the Cougars a 2-0 advantage with just over 11 minutes remaining.
Houston maintained its defensive composure through the final minutes, preventing Kansas from finding a response. The Cougars finished with nine shots with six on target, while holding the Jayhawks to eight shots and just two on target.
Houston delivered a memorable result in its home finale, shutting out a nationally ranked Kansas team. After a scoreless 45 minutes, Houston found its rhythm in the second half, scoring twice to secure its first victory over a ranked opponent since October 2021 against No. 23 Memphis.
The Cougars improved to 11-3-4 overall and 7-2-1 in Big 12 play.
The Houston Cougars are set to play the Baylor Bears on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 pm in Waco, TX, hoping to end their Big 12 season on a high.
