UH Students Against Sweatshops marched from M.D. Anderson Library to Room 212, Ezekiel W. Cullen Building on Thursday to present UH President Renu Khator with a list of the top 10 reasons why the student organization believes UH is a fourth-tier institution.
Even though the group was once again met by a president-less office.
The students handed their cardboard list to Theresa Singletary, executive assistant to the president.
"Knowing the ‘Cougar paw’ hand sign is more important than ending the use of sweatshop labor for UH logo clothes" and "Renu Khator does not put students first" were listed as its No. 7 and No. 1 reasons, respectively.
In addition to strengthening its community ties, the student organization aims to gain momentum for fall by slating more educational speakers to visit campus, increasing its recruitment efforts, planning more social actions and ensuring clothing with the UH logo is not sourced from sweatshops – all in an effort to achieve its goal to get Khator to sign on with the Designated Suppliers Program.
"Just getting their attention and having students see what we’re doing does have an impact on students," said biology junior Leticia Silva, who has been a member of Students Against Sweatshops since fall.
