Ready for some fun? Portland, Ore. indie-pop group All Girl Summer Fun Band’s Looking Into It, released today, is definitely worth a listen.
Looking Into It tackles bold subjects such as death, greed, getting fired and new love interests with a bright and fairly upbeat pop/rock sound.
The album begins with "Not the One for Me," a song about a relationship that is more than a friendship but not quite a romantic relationship. Kim Baxter, Jen Sbragia and Kathy Foster sing, "We’re too far from a friendship / And too close to breaking hearts."
Further down the track list is "The Only Ones," which features creative yet surreal lyrics. "You followed me back to the city / And brought the ocean into my room / Holding my hand and whispering close / So close."
Overall, the album is well done, though the band could have experimented with more sounds. There isn’t much variety, as every song sounds similar. No song stands out as far as the music goes. The music is good, but the creativity that breathes life into the album comes mainly from the lyrics.
All Girl Summer Fun Band named its album Looking Into It in part because it decided to self-record and self-release this album. Previous albums, one self-titled released in 2002 and another, 2, released the following year, were both recorded by K Records.
Looking Into It is recommended for lovers of indie-pop music and those who appreciate that speaks of everyday happenings on a deeper level.
