Families flock to Miller

True to its motto, ‘It’s free, it’s fun, it’s for everyone,’ the Miller Outdoor Theatre is already working hard to bring the best entertainment to Houston.

To date the local performance venue has 129 free performances scheduled for this season.

‘No one else in the country does that,’ Cissy Segall-Davis, managing director of the Miller Outdoor Theatre said. ‘Nobody has eight months chockfull of cultural arts presentations, free of charge.’

Segall-Davis first became acquainted with the theater in 1979 as a camp counselor, who brought kids to play on the hill. Since then, the theater has grown to become one of Houston’s favorite venues. Expect to see lots of families taking advantage of the free and family-friendly performances.

‘(Miller Outdoor Theatre) makes the arts accessible for everyone,’ Segall-Davis said.

The theater offers audiences the chance to sit in covered row chairs, or on top of a large hill. The renovated Miller Outdoor Theatre has just completed a two-year renovation project.

‘We made it more pedestrian friendly (and) put in fans in the ceiling to move air to make a more pleasant experience,’ Segall-Davis said.

Covered seating, views from the hill and accessibility were also improved.

Funded by the city of Houston and private donations, the Miller Outdoor Theatre constantly brings diverse, quality performances to the area.

This season features performances by the Golden Dragon Acrobats, Verdi’s Rigoletto by the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Symphony.’ Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and again April 16, 17 and 18.

‘(The Miller Outdoor Theatre) is a very, very special place. Houston is lucky to have it,’ Segall-Davis said.

Always free, reserve tickets are needed to sit in the covered seating. For hillside seating, bring a blanket or lawn chairs. For more information, visit http://www.milleroutdoortheatre.com.
