Music junkies can head to several venues this weekend to hear some excellent acts.
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion celebrates its 20th season in fine fashion this summer by hosting some of the biggest acts around.
Houston’s diversity has made it a crucial stop for any big name band. Heeding this notion has brought funk legends Earth, Wind, and Fire featuring Chicago this Friday.
For those who deign to say all of your heroes are dead, or maybe are just looking for something familiar, Fitzgerald’s caters to your needs.
Headlining Friday on the main stage is Black Dog, the self-proclaimed best Brazilian Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple cover band. Or, to simply put it, four Brazilian guys who love to play the classics. Their game is authenticity and resurrecting one of the world’s most revered bands.
Accompanying them that night is Spiral Out, a cover band for cult favorite Tool. While the original band is out surfing for aliens in the Nevada desert, one can hear their mind-bending in vitro music played live this weekend.
Saturday is also a busy night for Fitzgerald’s with two more cover bands. Get out your black leather and rubber snakes because Alice Cooper tribute band, Love it to Death, will be playing with Gene’s Addiction, a Kiss cover band. All of Fitzgerald’s performances this weekend start at 8 p.m.
If covers aren’t your forte, maybe the Wild Moccasins’ minimal approach to indie rock will help make the best of your weekend. Slow, easy-going melodies that break down and inceasingly build up get the crowd going.
Singers Cody Swann and Zahira Gutierrez compliment the hectic, yet controlled chords of the band. Whether Gutierrez is chiming out her crisp octaves, or Swann is breaking open his unpredictable banter, the Wild Moccasins are sure to turn out something to tap feet to.
Coming back to Houston after touring, the band’s harmonious scores and western-style plucking is an odd combination, but one that has most of the Houston scene waiting for their arrival. The Wild Moccasins will play at 8 p.m. Saturday at Mango’s.
Not everyone needs a safe bar or a quiet lawn to relax on. A surging crowd, raw, sweaty arms rubbing together and the inevitable kick in the head by a crowd surfer can do wonders for stress and excess energy.
The Meridian is not for everyone, but those who know Anti-Nowhere League’s reputation shouldn’t be surprised by their pairing for this night of debauchery.
Anti-Nowhere League is recognized as one of the most hardcore bands to date. Skate legend and punk icon Duane Peters and the Gunfight will join this fun, but stigmatized band.
