The sorority was founded on Nov. 9, 1874 by five women from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Since then, Sigma Kappa has grown to reach numerous universities.

Sigma Kappa’s mission is to create and fund leadership, scholarship and philanthropic initiatives that reflect the values and spirit of the sorority, according to its website.
